When pictures of Kim Kardashian’s rock started circulating my first thought was, ‘Shit, that thing is so big it looks fake’. Yep, the giant 15 carat designed by jeweller-to-the-stars, Lorraine Schwartz, didn’t send me green with envy, it honestly got me wondering if you can have too much of a good thing.
When I see someone with a ring big enough to block a drain I always wonder if it’s real, call me a cynic, but I can’t help it. I have the same approach to jewellery as I do to handbags, if you’ve got the cash to spend up big you don’t need to be flashy about it. A gloriously clear and brilliantly cut diamond in a delicate setting is akin to a fuss-free, but super-luxe Celiné handbag in my yet-to-be-published book.
Now, I highly doubt Kanye has pulled a swifty on Kim and presented her with a cubic zirconia rock, but when I look at her, reportedly 6 million dollar ring, I struggle to get over the sheer size of the beast so I can enjoy the beauty of it. So can you have too much of a good thing? When it comes to carats, I’m kinda thinking yes. This flashy ring borders on trashy, which is a scary thing to say about a piece of jewellery worth enough to pull a small country out of poverty (totally made that up, but shit it sounds good).
What do you think? Love Kim’s ring? Already emailed it to your boyfriend? (If so, don’t expect him home tonight).
